Young People Dying from Unintentional Injuries
An Associated Press news report says unintentional injuries are the leading cause of death among people ages 1 to 34 and the fifth leading cause of death for all ages. The Indiana State Department of Health injury report for the years 2003 to 2006 says unintentional injuries trail only heart disease, cancer, strokes and chronic lower respiratory disease as a leading cause of death for Indiana residents.
Indiana’s death rate for all injuries was 58 per 100,000, or more than 14,600 lives lost during the study period. The report says more than half of the unintentional injuries were a result of motor vehicle crashes, poisonings and falls.
